Deepavali Celebration!

On the 26th of October, the members of Interact Club of St. John Institution volunteered in helping out the Deepavali Celebration which was sponsored by Tan Sri Dato Dr. L.Krishnan.

This celebration is held every year during the Deepavali holidays at our very own school, St. John's Institution. The purpose of this event is to bring happiness to the old folks, specially gifted people and orphans as well. During the event, Interactors helped by arranging the seats, ushering the guests to their seat, handing out foods and drinks and also cleaning up the venue after the event has ended.

As the saying goes, pictures speaks a thousand words, these are the pictures taken during the event:
Marcus, one of the old boys from St.John's Institution who have been volunteering himself in this event year after year. He is also one of the coordinator for this event.
The kids performing to entertain the crowd.
The smiles on their face that brought joy to us, the volunteer workers. =)

The Anniversary cake
Tan Sri Dato Dr L.Krishnan handing out cakes to orphans as well as old folks.

Food was prepared for those who attended the event and also the workers of the event.
Group photo taken with Tan Sri Dato Dr L.Krishnan along with Marcus.

As the Incoming President of SJI's Interact Club, I would like to voice out our gratitude to the organizers for giving us the chance to gain experience that would probably occur only once in a lifetime.

And also, I would like to personally thank Marcus, for being there to guide and help us when in need. Although it was tiring and all, we still managed to have fun during the preparation for this event. =)

Yours sincerely,
Brandon L.

Halloween

ICC Meeting on 30th October 2010. To the BODs please attend.

Other then that, 31st October is Halloween!!

Even though Malaysia doesn't really celebrate this day. We as Interactors should learn and take the time to understand other cultures and tradition. This Halloween would be a great way to start.

Ancient Origins of Halloween

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.
The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Trick-or-treating
Trick-or-treating is a customary practice for children on Halloween seen in many countries. Children in costumes, either in large groups or accompanied by an adult, travel from house to house in order to ask for treats such as candy(or, in some cultures, money) with the question "Trick or treat?". The "trick" is a (usually idle) threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

The tradition of going from door to door receiving food already existed in Britain and Ireland, in the form of souling, where children and poor people would sing and say prayers for the dead in return for cakes. Guising — children disguised in costumes going from door to door for food and coins — also predates trick or treat, and was traditional at Halloween by the 19th century in Scotland and Ireland. While going from door to door has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the North American custom of saying "trick or treat" has recently become common. In Mexico, where it is called calaverita (Spanish for "little skull") instead of "trick or treat", children ask ¿me da mi calaverita? ("can you give me my little skull?").

This holiday is not praticed in Malaysia but it is good to widen our knowledge here and there. :)
So thank you for taking some time to read this! :D

On the 19th of August, Wesley Methodist School held their Installation day.

"Certificates for Being a Successful Interactor"were presented to the WMS BOD of 09'10 after a year of success.

The Official Installation of WMS Interact Club.
We all loved the part where the outgoing board gave gifts to the incoming board as a reminder to the duties they bare in the future, some were very touching, some were very humorous.. for example, the IU directors were given a map, to so called "broaden their thoughts and ideas" for the WMS IU day of 2011, It's gonna be a wonderful and awesome IU day i'm sure.

P.S. Good Luck to newly appointed BODs of WMS!!
